Everybody wants to have radiant skin. We even go to the extreme of searching for products that can help us achieve such skin instantly. It is alarming that many brands manufacture products that are filled with potentially toxic chemicals and animal-based ingredients. Many of these ingredients can become harmful. Whenever you shop for skin care products, be sure to check the ingredients before purchasing. Below are 4 skin care ingredients we recommend avoiding in your facial cleanser:
Sulfates are common in most cleansing agents. These types of ingredients are too strong for the skin and cause surface dehydration. Sulfates such as ammonium laureth sulfate, ammonium lauryl sulfate, sodium lauryl sulfate and sodium laureth sulfate are harsh surfactants that leave the skin dry and dehydrated. You should look for a sulfate-free facial cleanser simply because they are gentle and non-damaging to the skin.
Parabens are known as a preservative used by the food, pharmaceutical, and personal care product industries. Parabens mimic estrogen and can act as potential hormone (endocrine) system disruptors. This is why parabens may be linked as a cause of cancer, especially breast cancer. They are found in most skin care products such as shampoos, body lotions, anti-aging treatments, face washes, and more. Always remember to check the label in the type of face cleanser you handpick to avoid falling victim to paraben’s negative effects.
Alcohols are used in skin care products because they act as a surfactant and emulsifying agent. They have the ability to make thick skin care products feel almost weightless. They are irritating, extremely drying and are damaging to the skin. Alcohols such as ethyl alcohol and isopropyl alcohol erode the skin barriers, therefore causing irritation. They are suspected to be an environmental toxin and linked to organ system toxicity. Another reason many alcohol-based ingredients are toxic is because they are derived from animal sources. However not all alcohols are bad for you they can be derived from a vegetable source. It’s important to source Vegan skincare products for this reason.
Also known as liquid petroleum, liquid paraffin or white oil, these ingredients aggravate chronic skin conditions such as dermatitis, eczema and acne. Petroleum or petrochemicals may lead to premature aging. Mineral oils have been associated with being a possible toxicant or allergen and may be linked to organ system toxicity. Cosmetics use “cosmetic grade” mineral oil, which is more purified than technical grade. Studies have not linked this oil with cancer, but scientists have expressed concern about it. A 2011 study for example, reported that contamination could be a relevant source of “mineral oil contamination.” Researchers stated, “There is strong evidence that mineral oil hydrocarbons are the greatest contaminant of the human body, amounting to approximately 1 gram per person. Possible routes of contamination include air inhalation, food intake, and dermal [skin] absorption.” These oils can also be very dangerous to the liver and kidneys, which are responsible for detoxification in the body. One more reason to avoid mineral oil? It clogs pores! Mineral oil is considered “comedogenic,” which means it can clog your pores and increase the risk of acne and blackheads. It doesn’t provide your skin with anything beneficial. For me, this is probably the best reason to avoid mineral oil. Yes, it may contribute to body contamination, and it may make you break out. But most of all, it is not doing anything for your skin.
Given that the effects of the above ingredients to the skin are not desirable why would you risk using them? You can achieve beautiful skin without sacrificing results and not risking your health. Always look at the ingredients on the label. By not being precautious, you are putting your skin, and sometimes health, at risk. Always use facial cleansers with non-toxic ingredients.
