Although most people know going to bed without washing your face is bad, sometimes it’s not clear about what your evening routine should be and why?
Research shows that several things happen for your skin during sleep. The most important one being that new skin cells grow faster while you sleep. At night, there is a perfect opportunity to repair damage from the day due to pollution, stress and sun. In addition, it’s an optimal time to hydrate since you lose more water from your skin while you snooze. Let’s review all the ways you can improve skin while sleeping.
WASH YOUR FACE
It’s imperative that you remove all makeup and build up from the day. Even though some of my clients confess they are sometimes too tired, this step is truly important. It really doesn’t take long; you could do a fast wash in less than 30 seconds, although we estheticians would prefer a more thorough cleansing. A great cleanser that suits your skin type and a brush like Clarisonic or a washcloth will do the job nicely. Some clients overdo it with the brushes and exfoliation, so please minimize or stop if you notice changes in your skin.
MAKE SURE YOUR PRODUCTS CAN WORK EFFICIENTLY
In between your routine facial appointments, you may notice that your products seem to work less effectively. It’s a good idea to use a gentle exfoliation periodically to help allow your active ingredients to penetrate the skin and absorb more easily. Eminence Organic’s Pear & Poppy Seed Microderm Polisher was created as a perfect harmony of pear and apple pulp to gently remove excess dead skin while infusing hydration at the same time. Some people, like those with oily skin, may prefer some type of scrub or clay base mask. Either way, this done a couple times a week will help keep your skin ready to absorb all the good benefits of your nighttime treatments.
TIME FOR YOUR SKIN TREATMENT
Now is the time for your retinol, glycolic or other AHA product to go on. These are the products that will do all the work and help your skin while you sleep. Always make sure you have consulted a professional or doctor and understand what you are using and what results to expect. Very often clients use products that are too strong or are simply using them incorrectly which can result in irritated and dry skin. We also explain to our clients that even if your treatment is in a cream base, that does not make it a moisturizer. If you’re normal, dry or sensitive you will need to hydrate after this step.
HYDRATE, HYDRATE, AND HYDRATE YOUR SKIN
Regardless of skin type hydration is an imperative part of the evening routine. The best repairing ingredients are antioxidants, peptides, vitamins like A and C, and anti-inflammatory ingredients that will help repair the damages of the day. We believe this so strongly at The Wax Shop that we use all these ingredients and a pharmaceutical grade hyaluronic acid throughout our facial services.
DON’T FORGET YOUR EYES
Gently pat your eye cream all around the orbital bone. Eye creams are made with a different molecular structure to accommodate and penetrate the delicate skin in this area. Again the more packed with peptides, antioxidants and hydration the better to restore and stay off wrinkles in this sensitive area.
Most importantly, get some sleep! If you don’t rest yourself even the best products can only go so far.
